Hot Dog Days of Summer

It is so hot here, I don't even know what to say about it:  102*F (39*C), gah!

So rather than regale you with descriptions of the searing heat, crunchy grass, and suffocating humidity, I will share what we had for supper last night.  Some recipes are just suited for hot weather, I've always thought.

Chicago Dog Salad*

1/4 cup yellow mustard
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 rounded teaspoon sugar
1 tsp. celery seed
2 tablespoons canola oil

1/2 of a 16-ounce sack shredded cabbage blend for slaw salads
1/2 medium red onion, thinly sliced
1 romaine heart, shredded
2 vine ripe tomatoes, diced
3 large half sour or garlic pickles, chopped
Salt and pepper
8 pork or beef hot dogs, cut into 1-inch-thick slices on an angle

In the bottom of a large bowl, combine mustard, vinegar, sugar, celery seed, and oil. Add the onions, cabbage, romaine, tomatoes, and pickles and toss the salad. Season with salt and pepper, adjust seasonings, and reserve.

Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Arrange the sliced dogs in a single layer. Sear them a couple of minutes on each side. Remove to paper towels to drain.

Mound up the salad on plates, top with seared dogs, and serve.

* as found in Everyday with Rachael Ray magazine

You might also notice that if you leave out the sugar and choose your dogs carefully, this is a very, very low carb recipe.

Keep cool!

Sounds good!

I hope you get a break soon, Renee. Believe it or not, after a week of rain and humidity (and an earache from it), we had a high in the high 80's yesterday, or so read my car temp when I got in it.

I cling to St. Augustine like a cheap suit in the summer because inland, it is HOT. Here, we have a breeze off the water. Water = relief!

XO,

Sheila :-)

If your temps are that hot, you must have central A/C, though. :-)

Yes, how to eat, when it's hot?!? Always a challenge.

Oooh Sweetie...
Hot Dog is this ever a great sounding recipe. I will be giving them a try for sure.

I know all about the heat sweet one. Let me tell you out my back patio door I can see the thermometer, and in the shade yesterday it was 116 degrees. Yep we get our share of the heat out here in the desert. But it's a dry heat, so they say.

Hope your day is a good one. Sending many hugs and much love your way, Sherry

and Your song list is always cool.
Pasta with shredded cheese is really good when its hot. My kids love it.

I want to share one of my favorite songs with you {its not unusual to hear songs like this cranked up during the holiday cookings}

Your recipe sounds yummy! Found your comments over at Aunt Amelia's Attic and when I read that you like both the book and movie Enchanted April, I figured we must be kindred spirits, hitherto unveiled.

And I see you have her German Garden book, I haven't been able to find it around here in Canada)..... so I should check further afield.

I did find The Preacher's Wife (not sure if exact title) a few years ago, and I found it enlightening, as some her struggles in her new setting as the wife of a German minister struck home... as my own ancestry is German/Polish.

It helped me to understand some of the culture I grew up in as a child.

Perhaps we can visit and become friends... if E.A. is a link, we may have many more to discover!

Blessings......

I'm stuck inside with this heat, sweetie! Suffocating ... flowers are biting the dust, despite watering ... oy! I am so sad ...

I think I'll give this a try ... something different/new.

Have a lovely summer's eve ~

OMGosh! I LOVE hot dogs. They are truly gourmet food. I'm going to have to try this.

Keep cool! When I was driving home Tuesday night my car thermometer read 106! (And this was the driving number, not the sitting still in the heat number!)

It's terribly melty out there.

Now that's what I call a summertime dinner. I can just see it on the table. I'll bet it was delicious.
Inbrace the heat and keep thinking that it will not last forever.
I think you are handling it very well.
